fillets? And the cure for dancing all night long without getting sore
feet? It's the inspirational, charming and innovative George
Tsoukalas... Here are Georges tips to making it in the fashion and
cosmetics biz..
Where did you
start you career?
Well I am a
fashion baby - my mother has been in the rag trade all my life. My earliest
memory was the production rooms of Merivale and Mr. John in the ‘70s where my
mother worked. The smell of fabrics and the memory of amazing garments are still
with me to this day. My early career was not in fashion but in Beauty. Here I am
a Science Law student working part time at Sydney Airport Duty Free, thrown into
the Beauty Area which quickly became my passion. Cut to me dropping out of Uni -
shock horror - and moving into the Beauty Industry whilst studying Marketing.
The rest is history. I was blessed to work in fantastic business like the
L'Oreal Group, LVMH Perfumes and Cosmetics and Elizabeth Arden. Hollywood is my
first full blow fashion role and I feel like I've come full circle from all
those years ago playing at my mum's feet.
What do you
love about your job?
When you work
in cosmetics and especially for big international brands, you do not get the
chance to create your own product. What I love about this role is that I can
create product from a concept and see the process through to that product being
sold on the retail floor.
Tell us about
your average day
Bash the
alarm and then go for a run, drop off kids at school(when in town), check
emails/facebook/emails/facebook, go into sales meeting with team, check status
on everything in production, speak to suppliers in the US and China (try to
communicate via phone - impossible most days), get feedback on the newest
silicone nipple cover (sometimes I don't understand but go with the flow), do a
fitting with models on a new Shapewear Line oh and have a chat to a Miss
Universe - Laura Dundovic - who is our official ambassador, check
emails/facebook/emails/facebook, post something on our facebook page that sounds
likes its coming from a girl but it's really coming from me, go home, play with
kids, try to help them with their homework, put them to bed and then back on the
emails to chat to our partners in Korea/Japan/Singapore/Taiwan. All in a day's
work.
Is there
anything you dread doing?
I must say
that I am blessed that I completely love my job so there aren't many things I
don't like doing!!
Advice to
someone wanting a fashion career
Best
industry, be tenacious, think commercially, don't try and take the sand to the
beach - you will not succeed, trust you gut and surround yourself with good
mentors
Is it who you
know or what you know?
It's what you
know about who!! No just kidding - it's what you don't know, what you have
learnt and how you apply this knowledge to every day in this industry. Who you
know is also important however it's about the ‘Who" you surround yourself
with.
What inspires
you?
My mum and
late dad, my sister and then there is my wife and kids who inspire and allow me
to do what I do every day. I have been blessed to have been exposed to a handful
of mentors throughout my career and daily I pull from my mental roller deck
things they taught me. You spend too much time at your job not to like what you
do or have to have elements of Inspiration throughout your
day.
