It's simply a fact that many many successful people in fashion today started their careers in retail.  From well know names like Allanah Hill and Peter Alexander to unknowns but highly successful people in fashion, people who design and buy the brands you love all had humble beginnings selling on the retail shop floor.

Retail will give you an insight on many levels, take garment construction for example.  By selling you will get to understand the difference between a raglan and set in sleeve, a box pleat and an a line skirt and a boot leg and straight leg pant.. Sounds trivial?  Well it isn't when you are a buyer's assistant! Fact is, different style and design will become second nature when you sell in fashion retail.  You will also get a great understanding for what suits particular body shapes and this is the first step to being a top fashion stylist!

But it is not only product knowledge that will create your path to success in fashion.  You need to understand running a business and retail will also provide this.  In fashion retail you will get to learn and understand the terminology of the trade.. What's a pack break-up? Or Mark down? How do you manage a budget? What's a multiple sale?  What's upselling? Stock Transfers? You will be in your everyday working with the terminology of fashion and getting and understanding from the retail shop floor perspective of the happenings of the trade. And it's not bad from a perks perspective either!  Almost every retailer gives discounts on product to their staff and they have amazing training nights and events.  When you manage a retail store, you are managing a business and it is fabulous experience for you to have on your CV.
